Hi Ed,
you made some good points.
The SAM (I think this means synchronous AM?) feature seems to be the plus of the WJ's.
But as I said in my first posting to Don:
>So If your other receivers performed really better than the Icom on MW this isn't definitely
>a sensitivity issue.
It would be interesting to compare the 7800 in ECSS mode (listening to AM stations in SSB mode)
to the WJ's in SAM mode.
Another point is that Don reports with respect to ham stations:
>I've used one of my wj8711A's for receive (disabled during transmit) along with the 7800 to do
>some very weak >signal ham radio qsos -- the 7800 could not keep up...
I can't derive from the specs any reason for this.
With your R390A:you mean in combo with the SE3?
The 7800 can't have a 455kHz IF output because it goes straight down from fist IF around 70 Mhz
to around 32kHz or so.
Any modern premium (DSP) receiver today is designed like this.
R&S still go one step further:
Their next receiver, which is in the beta test stage now, won't have any IF.
It samples the HF signal directly at a ~32 Mhz rate to DSP.
A friend of mine,a retired R&S engineer,is one of the beta testers...

Amen, Clemins...My findings exactly.....The digital hash from the WJ also needs to be taken
into account....They're both fun to use, and I won't part with either. But the 7800 has a feel
to it that is solid and well worth the expenditure. These opinions are highly subjective, which
makes the hobby what it is.....
Don however has taken these rx's out to the field and has battle tested them, so I feel his
points are valid. The audio recovery on the WJ is truly superb and the SAM is hard to beat.
Plus, the WJ allows a direct connection to the SE-3. A shame that the 7800 does not have a 455
IF output.
I sent my Icom R-9000 into Sherwood for IF output modification to make it compatible with the
SE-3. Also added other filters for AM (3/4/6 kHz) and the external fan. This receiver is very
quiet and compares favorably to the WJ on BCB, too.
The ideal situation is to have all of them running through a lossless, high quality
multicoupler for a more direct comparison. The restored EAC R390A beats them all! Simply
amazing.....
