I worked on that 3586C a long time ago. It wasnt' mine, and I don't have a manual for it. I wish I could tell you what crystals had to be changed, but I'm afraid I can't.

I have modified both an HP 312A and 3586C by changing the BFO frequencies. It requires removing and replacing two crystals. I haven't tried to install AGC, preferring instead to leave the voltage measurement capability undisturbed. Manual gain control works well on these since there is such a big range of attenuation. On LF, I never use AGC on any receivers since lightning static messes it up too much. For LF operation, you will probably need a low pass filter cutting the BC band out on both of these.
As a sidenote, IMHO, the 3586C is built as good as any Premium RX I've seen. All those gold plated boards and beautiful machining are something to see.

That would be a neat project for the 3586. I am also wondering if anyone has ever added an AGC to the HP-312A or similar selective voltmeter? That would make a dandy VLF receiver with a decent AGC action. Love that Nixie Tube readout! Shouldn't be too hard to plug in a new crystal to lower the BFO offset frequency.
