[Premium-Rx] HP 3586C as Rx ?

Mine are all the 3586B model and I think of them as very "premium" receivers. The stock "B" is fine for LSB/USB. They do have an AGC - a bit slow and chunky, as it is in 5 db steps but it is better than nothing. But I will admit mine primarily get used as a test receiver/generator as the 0 dbm tracking signal out the rear is so handy for so many tests - preamps, filters, switch isolation, attenuation etc etc.

I have modified both an HP 312A and 3586C by changing the BFO frequencies. It requires removing and replacing two crystals. I haven't tried to install AGC, preferring instead to leave the voltage measurement capability undisturbed. Manual gain control works well on these since there is such a big range of attenuation. On LF, I never use AGC on any receivers since lightning static messes it up too much. For LF operation, you will probably need a low pass filter cutting the BC band out on both of these.

As a sidenote, IMHO, the 3586C is built as good as any Premium RX I've seen. All those gold plated boards and beautiful machining are something to see.

Has anyone on the list modified this SLM to make it more useable as a receiver like adding avc/agc, lower BFO freq,. etc?
      tnx

That would be a neat project for the 3586. I am also wondering if anyone has ever added an AGC to the HP-312A or similar selective voltmeter? That would make a dandy VLF receiver with a decent AGC action. Love that Nixie Tube readout! Shouldn't be too hard to plug in a new crystal to lower the BFO offset frequency.
