The earliest "premium" receiver I am aware of is one that I saw in 1975 when
I joined Racal.  They had a receiver on the coast connected to a large
directional antenna array being controlled over telephone lines from an
exhibition in central London about 250 miles away.  The receiver controller
had 32 memory channels and an auxilliary calculator type display for
storing, recalling or swapping the memory settings with the main frequency
display. The receiver never went into production, but many of the control
techniques later went into the RA1781.
