[Premium-Rx] Racal 6790/GM VLF

I just acquired a Racal RA6790/GM with the designation R-2174B.  It appears
to be the VLF version.  It was built 4/92.

 

Externally it has the following differences from the R-2174 (A).

 

1.	It tunes down to 9kHz.  Below 9kHz the frequency display flashes,
but it still tunes.
2.	On the rear panel there are additional connections:

a.	VLF Ant In (N connector)
b.	3rd IF out (BNC)
c.	AM Out (BNC)
d.	FM Out (BNC)

 

Inside there are 5 additional assemblies:

            A14 & A15 (these two are stacked where the ISB option board
goes)

            A24 - stacked over the main board on a neat hinged construction.

            A23 & A25 - enclosed in small boxes (Switching?)

 

There is a set of instructions on the A24 cover describing filter set up.
It must be done manually (no room in the rom after adding VLF code?).

The radio has the computer control board installed as well - I wonder if
this is standard.

 

What can anyone tell me about this radio?  I intend to explore more, but
some guidance would be appreciated.
