Gas discharge devices of today have bigger electrodes inside the bulb to
flow more current
once the gas lights up. The RA6830 uses one of these with a self healing
series cap ahead
of an active limiter. The RA6790 RF amp module has a discharge tube and a
simple diode limiter.
The amplifier can be jumped out if you don't want the gain.  fc
