Subject: Re: [Premium-Rx] RG58
Hello, Richard
The double braided mil spec 50 Ohm coax of RG-58 size is RG-55B/U. If
it has teflon dielectric, it is RG-142B/U.
The only currently mil-spec RG-58 (single braided) coax is RG-58C/U
Versions earlier than RG-58C/U used a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) covering
, which would leach plasticizing agent over time to the inner
dielectric
material,
increasing the loss of the coax. RG-58C/U uses a type IIa protective
covering (non-contaminating PVC or PVC-acetate).
Likewise, RG-8/U (single braided) was replaced by the non-contaminating
RG-213/U
The double-braided RG-9/U (same size and loss as RG-8 coax) was
replaced by the non-contaminating RG-214/U.
Beware of coax that says something like "RG-58 type"
or "RG-8 type". The actual material is not necessarily mil spec, and if
the manufacturer is cutting corners, you won't get a good product. The
real McCoy coax will say Mil-C-17 on it. Recent military labeling of
RG-58C/U is M17/197-00001.
