I agree. Lots of performance improvements can be accomplished with good antennas as well as low noise pre-amplifiers, preselectors.
Good directional antennas also help focus in on the signal of interest. Loop antennas and directional antennas help improve Signal To Noise Ratios by concentrating gain in the direction of incoming signal and lowering noise coming from elsewhere. Some of the directional antennas have or can be designed to have  very narrow bandwiths. This inherent Band Pass characteristic of these antennas also helps as a preselector eliminating the need for another lossy stage.
