[Premium-Rx] Classless MP1000?

"Class". Hmmm... Is that kinda like the "warm" sound one gets from a
tube amplifier? Or the "thin" sound that one gets from a CD vs vinyl...
"If it ain't measurable, then it can't be improved" (can anyone ID the
original author of this quote?)
I tried to "smell" my WJs, Racals and Collins this morning. They
smelled exactly like my Icoms and Yaesus and Kenwoods, except from the
one that I bought from that shut-in chain-smoker in Kentucky (but you
get the picture).
However, I could give you some measured figures for 3rd order intercept
points, for example. It is interesting to note that my receivers with
high 2nd and 3rd order intercepts are less susceptible to intermod from
our kilowatt class FM and TV stations nearby. And the ones with good
flat audio response have deeper bass and higher treble than those that
roll off on both ends. And the ones with low noise-figure front ends
seem to pick up weaker stations better than those with poor front ends.
Alas, the beauty of careful and independent, unbiased, meausurements...
I'd hate this list to devolve into a snobby wine-tasting contest, but I
fear that's just a part of the charter.
Merry Christmas!

Dang! I have both those rigs, and all this time I really thought the
1000MP had class. Solid construction, not a bit tinny, elegant and
understated styling, fun to use, what's not to like? (In addition to its
performance, of course!)

Well, I think all of this discussion boils down to a very simple fact,
and it is one which no lab instrument can measure, yet we all aspire to
own--CLASS.
A lot of prems have it,
a lot of rice boxes don't.
And to have class, it doesn't necessarily have to have the best
performance, nor be the most reliable.
It is something you know you have in a radio or you know is not there. I
have a Yaesu 1000mp, which is in most ways a better radio than my 6790.
But the Racal has CLASS, the Yaesu does not. You can guess which one I
use most.
