[Premium-Rx] spectrum Analyzer to use as a signal monitor

Hi Group,

All the talk about which spectrum analyzer to use as a pan-adapter caught my
interest, as did the IF up-conversion question. My experience has been with
using an HP 8568B spectrum analyzer, which covers 100Hz thru 1.5GHz with
frequency counter accuracy. These are extremely affordable these
days...they can be had for $1500-$2500 intact or for approx $1200 as
separate RF/IF-Display units if you buy carefully. Of course, you'll need
manuals which are dirt cheap as well. Truth is, the 8568B (or 8566B) are
more instrument than any of our receivers are/were for the time.

The 8568B can accept almost any IF frequency and bandwidth.

The HP instrument will address all the concerns, as I recall, through the
macro functions. That is, one can program complex setups into a button so a
single button push can do stuff like "set start frequency/stop frequency,
reference level, log vs lin scale, readout digital resolution, resolution
BW, video BW (still all just 1 push). One may program many macros, thus
having popular settings available as a button push each.

In addition, not only is the 8568B a test instrument, but it can do band
occupancy, channel occupied BW, modulation mode determinations, noise
studies, and drive an HP plotter directly off the GPIB connector. It also
can be set up with a PC to do reflex tuning of a receiver based on peak
signal strength, highest avg strength, etc.

regards

John Collins
