I use two AAA NiMH cells in a Rat Shack holder.  The NiMH cells don't 
release  corrosive gasses like the NiCDs.  I mount them near the input 
roofing filter using one of the chassis screws and run wires back to the 
microprocessor board.  I've done this on several Racals and WJs and the 
NiMH cells charge and work fine.

I doesn't look original but my processor board will never be damaged by 
corrosion.
