Hi Aron & List
When marked on military equipment, "MFP" stands for "moisture/mildew-fungus
protection". It is a special varnish-like coating applied to protect
against moisture, corrosion and growth of various organisms in humid
environments, including shipboard use.
That's probably what that wj8718a/mfp means. Do you have one like that?
The old US military gear has a red "MFP" stamp imprint somewhere on the
front panel or chassis. I suppose it can be hard-stamped into the tag
alongside the model number.
The coating is usually yellow-gold in color, though some may be nearly clear
and colorless. In addition to sealing the surfaces agains moisture, the
coating has some nasty ingredients that inhibit mold, bacteria, fungus, etc.
essentially poisonous, like mercury compounds.
It is usually necessary to scrape this away when doing any soldering work,
which can be a bit of a nuisance. However, it should otherwise be left
alone as long as the coating is intact. Avoid inhaling or ingesting the
stuff if it's flaking or you have to remove some for soldering or whatever.
Again, that's probably what it means -- otherwise it would be an awkward
coincidence.
Barry
