Well done - a 1792 for free - !!!!!!!.
Before ripping the CPU board to bits - check for dry joints, and also re-seat
the chips (if they are in holders). Some sockets were a poor design, and the
chips 'walk' out with time!
If the display is actually showing zero's, but they don't change - it may be the
CPU interface device (MK3853) or related components. This is one of the easier
CPU controlled radios to fix.
I have a source of spares, including CPUs etc. Let me know if you are stuck.
