  Hi Frank,
Purely subjective I guess. I didn't compare specs; I have my radios set up
in my ham shack and can switch antennas to compare them. I guess I like the
Plessey because:
  1. It is only 16" deep and doesnt take up the whole desk
  2. It is georgeous
  3. It receives any station in frequency guides I punch up on it and has a
two speed knob for searching the band
  4. Often it will get a weak signal when the others will not
  5. It is easy to use and it sounds good.
I used to think the Collins Rx in the KWM 380 and its separate 451S-1
version were the best radios I had ever heard but I like the Plessey better.
Collins seems to be easing out of the HF comm business so I sold my Collins
gear except for one HF-80 station and am now using the Harris RF-350K Trx
and the Sunair 9000. The latter is a very sophisticated little radio but the
Rx doesn't sound as good to me as the one in the Harris 350.
One of the best radios I ever owned was the National HRO-600 but I traded
if for a JRC 9250. That was a mistake! I used to send in my HRO-600 signal
reports to SW BC stations all over the world and get back not just qsl cards
and letters, but requests to become an "official listner" (what ever that
is?) and make regular signal reports. Maybe it was because I could provide
microvolts/sq m and not just S readings?

I wonder why you think it was better?
Does it have better dynamic range, MDS
audio quality??? I just don't see why
this radio costs so much. Then there is
the parts issue. Plessey is gone isn't it? fc

I bought a Plessey 2282A from M&B two years ago for $2800, sent by Fedex
@ $220 plus US customs but it was damaged in transit. I sent it back to
Craig (another $220 FedEx) who repaired it and billed FedEx $700 for the
repairs. He sent it back to me (another $220) plus this time FedEx
demanded another $35 customs for the $700 repairs. I had some fun with
the twit who did this to me by arguing that they broke the radio and
they paid for the repairs with their $700, and they shouldn't have
allowed any US customs on the repairs anyway, so in any case they should
pay the $35 fee. Bureaucrats have no sense of humor. She stiffly
asserted that the repairs were made to my radio and were now part of it
so I must pay the custom fee whether it was correctly applied or not.
She offered no appeal, if I didn't agree to pay she would keep the
radio. So, this is how my $2800 radio came to be "worth" $3500. And
worth it, it is. I had a Racal 6780 and a Harris 590 and a Collins
851S-2 but I think the Plessey 2282A is the best radio of the lot. I
sold the Racal and Harris. I am keeping the Collins only because it
matches an HF-80 station I have built up from surplus HF-80 components.
I was going to keep the Harris because it matched a Harris RF-350-K
station but the Rx in the Harris 350 Trx is so good that I decided to
forego a tuning knob and sold the 590. I don't know if the 350 Rx is the
same circuit as the 590 but is is surely the best Rx I have ever
listened to 20M SSB on!

M&B Radio have a at least a couple, or did a month ago. They told me
they wanted £1500 sterling for them (about $2300). I to can't understand
this $4000 price.
