Hi Frank,
Purely subjective I guess. I didn't compare specs; I have my radios set
up in my ham shack and can switch antennas to compare them. I guess I
like the Plessey because:
1. It is only 16" deep and doesnt take up the whole desk
2. It is georgeous
3. It receives any station in frequency guides I punch up on it and has
a two speed knob for searching the band
4. Often it will get a weak signal when the others will not
5. It is easy to use and it sounds good.
I used to think the Collins Rx in the KWM 380 and its separate 451S-1
version were the best radios I had ever heard but I like the Plessey
better. Collins seems to be easing out of the HF comm business so I
sold my Collins gear except for one HF-80 station and am now using the
Harris RF-350K Trx and the Sunair 9000. The latter is a very
sophisticated little radio but the Rx doesn't sound as good to me as the
one in the Harris 350.
One of the best radios I ever owned was the National HRO-600 but I
traded if for a JRC 9250. That was a mistake! I used to send in my
HRO-600 signal reports to SW BC stations all over the world and get back
not just qsl cards and letters, but requests to become an "official
listner" (what ever that is?) and make regular signal reports. Maybe it
was because I could provide microvolts/sq m and not just S readings?
