I have the previous version -- RCS-4 chirpsounder receiver and the RSS-4
spectrum monitor, both fully functional as far as I can tell. These are
also called by the mil designations of R-2081 and R-2093, respectively. The
chirpsounder transmitter is T-1373 -- all part of the TRQ-35. I believe
those designations are constant and refer to the -4, -5 and up series.
The -4 stuff is older and larger -- the RCS-4 and RSS-4 are each made up of
two units -- the receiver itself, which is a 5 3/8 inch high rack mount and
the display control unit which is 10 3/4 inches high. Your RCS-5 is made up
of a single 8 3/4" high unit -- right? I don't know what the differences
are in terms of features, however both or all versions are supposed to be
compatible with the basic chirpsounding format and sequence.
I haven't worked with them much lately, but they are literally "ready to
roll" -- on their own carts. The spectrum monitor is fairly easy to set
up -- it just runs doing its thing. However, you have to synchronize the
chirpsounder rx with a transmitter within a fraction of a second using a
time reference such as GPS. I've tried to do this without much success,
though, frankly, I wasn't all that persistant.
Do you know how/when, etc.?
While a specialty, I agree, this fits in with the Premium-RX theme and the
results of the propagation soundings may be of more general interest to the
whole group. (Though there are other sources on the 'net for that.)
Rich is the ultimate expert -- as I recall, he also has the -5 series and is
directly involved on a professional basis.
