[Premium-Rx] Radios and High RF powers

Right you are, Richard:

One of the reasons for the extended tour of duty for the R-1051 series.
Although the later versions sported IC's in place of discrete components in
some modules, the RF stage continued to be tube driven (2). While they were
officially replaced and surplussed out long ago, some remain in service so
that one receiver will still work in the event of extreme difficulties --
such as tactical nukes. The 1051's might not belong here, however the
stability spec probably still exceeds that of most of the premium rx's. If
you engage the vernier, a warning light blinks to warn you that you're not
getting performance as advertised. Probably added by the legal department.

I think those little Ameco preamps with nuvistors have been regaining
popularity.

Don' t look now, but I hear there's some classified development going on
involving thermionic emission techniques -- hollow state technology -- on a
micro- level.

Jim,

A decent tube will have a very comparable noise figure at HF compared to
semiconductors. Don't write-off tubes just cos they're old technology.

I have several tubes sets in my collection, and all of them handle signals
at
least as well, if not better than semiconductor sets - and non of them have
ever
died as a result of even an almost direct lightning strike. Shortcomings in
tubes are little to do with noise - honest - trust me on this one.

I now retire to my nuclear bunker....

Richard
