Jim,

A decent tube will have a very comparable noise figure at HF compared to
semiconductors. Don't write-off tubes just cos they're old technology.

I have several tubes sets in my collection, and all of them handle signals at
least as well, if not better than semiconductor sets - and non of them have ever
died as a result of even an almost direct lightning strike. Shortcomings in
tubes are little to do with noise  - honest - trust me on this one.

I now retire to my nuclear bunker....
