[Premium-Rx] interference caused by tv sets

RFI - what a can of worms - spent most of my life hunting it down...

Much of the interference is radiated through the CRT glass too - so ferrite
beads will not necessarily be the solution. The plastic cases are frequently
sprayed internally with RF screening paint. Some flat screens have the same
problem.
A common fix (or at least an attenuator) is to fit very fine metal mesh (so
fine you can still see through it). This is also done to meet strict military
TEMPEST qualification for very low RF radiation. It is quite common to see it
on older HP CRT equipment (sometimes mistaken for anti-glare coating), which
was built to military standards way back then.
Some TVs and monitors will still radiate RF noise when switched off - as they
are not actually off - just 'sleeping' - some of the logic (and PSU) is still
very active.

Another serious source of interference is high-efficiency lamps. I have
reduced the RF noise from these using ferrite beads on the cable, and fine
chicken wire around the glass - which is connected to mains earth.

Don't use the mains earth for your radio - make a another somewhere - it will
definitely be 'cleaner'.

If I'm hunting serious DX - everything in the world is switched off, except
my radios and a battery powered incandescent lamp.

Best regards... :-)
