    The CP643 is a very nice FET but they are about
    $20 each the last time I checked. The TEN TEC
    340 gets around the high cost by putting 3-310s 
    on either side of their push pull amplifiers. I'm not sure how much room
there is to play, not ever having seen the radio. I'm told it is a very nice
unit.

The mixer heart of the 651s or the 718u  -is composed of 3 j-fetsper leg
2n4417 in paralel.I have the 651s-1 for more then
25 years now and still good. I have a spare a-6 unit here that i can spare. 
u310 or cp 643 of cryslalonics are vy good for that application.
In mine 718-u1 radio the rf was replaced with cp-643 and the 
resuls were much betterthan the original (i.p.  imd and etc)
As frank wrote heat the tiny screws gently and they will open. the rf fets
are those tiny white devices (2) next to the filter. if you need more info
