Hi Phil,

A legit balum would be best.  However, 6-7 turns of coax about six inches
in diameter likely would work but as you said it can be frequency dependent.

Ideally, a tuner at the antenna is best.  However, a tuner at the radio
will work.

You will learn in amateur radio that there are ideal solutions and then
there are practical solutions.  The practical solutions will get you on the
air and make contacts and you can work toward the ideal solutions as you
have time and funds.
