     Rob:

Been there and almost scammed by this as well. "Usually" they will state
they are from MS as about 80 % plus users use some form of MS products.
Usually at best speak broken English and if one listens closely you can
hear other scammers in the background, kinda sounds like an active
beehive! I haven't gotten that scam recently but I like to keep them on
the line, pretending to do what they ask. When it gets to they money
part I pretend to have a wake up moment and ask them from whom they're
calling, usually phony MS, and lastly tell them sorry, my computer is an
Apple or running Linux! Talk about upsetting the Pope!!

After one of these scams I "personally" contacted MS myself using the
phone # on the MS website! The agent I talked to said "MS will NEVER,
EVER contact you

by phone unless "you" request it! NEVER out of the clear blue!! If they
call and state they're from MS do whatever you want, hang up, string
them along, blow a whistle into the mouth phone piece, etc. but remember
MS, unless requested by you will NOT contact you! Whatever you do, DO
NOT part with your money!!

> Not just e-mail, but phone phishing. My dad fell victim to a phone scammer claiming that his computer was not operating up to its top performance, and offered to fix it. My dad let him in to the PC, where he then installed a remote monitoring tool, and my dad unwittingly gave the phisher his bank account info to facilitate easier payment to the scammer's PayPal acct. The scammer was then able to monitor my dad's bank account, watching for social security and retirement deposits, and would pull them out as soon as they came in. My dad didn't notice because the account balance wouldn’t change much as money went in and then came right out. Dad finally figured out this was happening, but probably was so embarrassed he didn't tell anyone, until my sister somehow discovered it, by my dad's change in his daily demeanor and she happened to hear him on a phone call with this scammer who was trying to get more money. We got it straightened out, but he lost about a thousand dollars. Older folks really do fall victim easier.
