[PPRAANet] Silly Antenna question

John --

If it's not too much trouble to install it in the place you have in
mind, even temporarily, give it a shot. At the minimum you'll buy
yourself the ability to test antenna A with antenna B directly and see
for yourself how the yagi is doing.

My guess is that the yagi will do fine. It definitely won't be
optimal, but even in a disadvantaged configuration, i.e. a few feet
above your roof, my guess it'll still probably outperform your G5RV in
the direction you want to be transmitting in. Materials near the
antenna, especially in the near-field and transition zone between near
and far fields, will no doubt have an effect on its impedance match and
pattern. You can likely tune out impedance effects with an antenna
tuner if needed, but the pattern will be what it will be. Be mindful
that, with that much gain right next to the innards of your house, you
may develop a case of RFI with things you didn't have before with the
G5RV, but that's just part of the game we play.

Have fun learning while having fun!
