Hi, Dick and all.
I have a BaoFeng UV-5RA HT that I bought a few weeks ago along with the
programming cable and a whip antenna.
I use the CHIRP software (http://chirp.danplanet.com) to program my HT
and it works well. To test the system (computer, software, cable, and
HT), I suggest using the CHIRP Live CD which is included in a Linux
distribution. The reason I tried that first is that when you boot up
the CD, the image is loaded into memory only. There are no disk
accesses unless you explicitly mount a disk partition which makes this
method virtually foolproof (myself, included.) If you want to keep an
image of his setup, you can mount a USB thumbdrive and save the image
and CSV (comma-separated variables) files. The CSV file is handy
because you can import the file into Excel (or the like) and after
tweaking column widths, et cetera, you can print out the configuration
for ready reference.
Bob, K0NR, said previously that the Wouxun cable works on the BaoFeng
HT. We can meet up and try out the software on a laptop using my cable
or your cable to verify compatibility. I can give you my live CD and
let you play with it.
I am busy on weekends so I won't be able to hookup until Monday at the
earliest. I can give you a ring tomorrow morning to arrange a contact.
For some unknown reason, I can't hit the CS repeaters, only the ones
west of Denver. (I suspect that the repeaters are sending their energy
from Monument to the south although I can see the Peak from my chair
here in Castle Rock.
Best,
George / KD0DQR
