I agree, Phil. Like Barry, I was beginning to think that something was wrong here. Of course, being "beamless" at present doesn't really help, but the HF-9V is a decent antenna as far as verticals go. In the case of VP8ORK, if in doubt, work them again as an insurance contact. My 5NN to them was a ludicrous report, but if I had sent anything else they probably would have questioned it. I checked their on-line log the next morning and I was in it. The QRM is fierce and with the people calling on their freq and tuning up, it takes a good pair of ears and some luck.

Even for a probably better than average station in a quiet location, they are not easy to work running 1.5 KW to gain antennas on any band. They are in and out of the noise all the time. I caught a peak in conditions last night and got them on 160 and 80 CW. Prior to last night I could hear them well enough on 80 to know it was them but I would have no clue who they came back to when. I called. I never heard them on 160 before last night. I think the Microlite concept is great for optium solar flux conditions near the equator but maybe not in this case with a polar station with 100w to verticals back from the ocean! I'm sure they are getting lots of dupes from people having trouble copying them!

Your welcome, Dick. The ironic thing is I didn't work them. Called on
30m (need them only on the warc bands) on and off for about 45 mins
without luck. Ah, the trials and tribulations of an ex-big gun, now
little pistol :.)

The following excerp is from The Feb. 2, 2011 edition of

Thanks to a heads up from Barry, W2UP, I went to 30 meters
(10.104 QSX 10.105.7) and was able to work them yesterday
evening. They were also coming in pretty decently on 40 meters,
but as usual it was a real lidfest and frequency cops ordeal,
along with idiots tuning up on top of them and the usual other
things that happen when there is a wanted entity on the air.

I'm just happy I was finally able to hear them, let alone work
them. So, my Butternut HF-9V did the job and I was barefoot,
which adds to the joy of the contact.

Thanks, Barry.

Hello DXers:

Many of you in the upper U.S.A. are having to deal with that huge
winter storm and we wish you well.

VP8ORK is the "talk of the town" this week as they continue to work
down the pileups. No, they are not LOUD, but believe me, they are
workable. They can hear VERY well from the reports I'm getting and
from my personal observation. If I can work them on 80-15 CW with
what I have for antennas, almost anyone should be able to work them.
You still have several days before they wrap-up on February 8th.
As of 01/Feb/2011 14:43Z, 32859 QSOs have been logged. The on-line
log search is available for you at: http://www.vp8o.com/vp8log.html

VK0/H - HEARD ISLAND
If you didn't work Heard back in 1997, you probably still need to add that
one to your log. It is now ranked at # 5 World-Wide on the DX Magazine
Most Wanted survey. You could have the opportunity in February of 2013.
Chris, VK3FY and Steve, VK6IR are co-leaders in planning for a DXpedition
to Heard. They are proposing a 13 member team for a two week operation
estimated to cost in the area of $500,000-USD. The announcement says
a website will be established to keep everyone informed.

Until next time, enjoy the chase but HAVE FUN ! ! !

73,
Carl, N4AA
