Ken and all,

Again, thanks for your comments and your attention. I always choose my words extremely carefully, whether for print or for over the air broadcast. Rest assured, my words were carefully chosen.

Your explanation of using the calling frequency first was most welcome. My question, however, was more about the choice of going to 146.560, which is outside of the Colorado 2 meter band plan.

Now that I understand that there has not been education within the PPRAA about the CCARC or the band plans for the 144, the 220, the 420 and the 1240 bands, I would repeat my suggestion of doing a program for the PPRAA on the newly updated, latest and greatest band plans. I had assumed that the board was being kept abreast of the efforts of the CCARC with regards to D Star and the latest digital technologies, and other updates to the band plan. Since PPRAA has had delegates at each of the last meetings the BSARC delegates can recall, I assumed that the board was getting regular updates. In years past the CCARC delegate reported directly to the club at meetings when there was something the membership needed to know.

Unfortunately, my schedule no longer allows me to be as active in PPRAA as I once was. I do monitor the club net when I am able, although I try not to use repeaters which I do not pay dues to support. I do commend the job you are doing. It can be trying at times. I know that the club is always looking for speakers. The first person you might ask for a talk about the band plan is your CCARC delegate. Mike, WV7T, was your technical education coordinator the last I knew. He might also have some contacts. The comments from Jeff, K0RM, included some valuable links to information.

Beyond that, is the club still affilliated with the ARRL? The ARRL website is not entirely user-friendly, but it provides an excellent information clearing house. I would strongly recommend that all amateurs consider membership in the ARRL as they are not only a source of information, but they are defenders of the amateur radio spectrum.

Again, thank you for your courteous attention and the time you are dedicating to the PPRAA.

73,
de KC0PBR

BTW--Simplex 2 meter FM from my QTH 10 watts to N0NKG atop Mount Columbia (+/- 120 miles) 5 by 9; simplex 2 meter FM 50 watts to Lake George, KB0VVA, also 5 by 9 and cleaner than through the repeater. Just me, a used dual band and a 3/4 " copper j-pole from ARRL antenna book.

Sharron,

I appreciate you pointing this out. I am a new ham. I’ve been doing electronics for over 40 years. Only a ham less than a year. I for one am learning new things every day. You are correct there is allot of good information out there. The problem is, there doesn’t seems to be one central location where one can go to find this information. At least I don’t know of any place. As VP. Of PPRAA, I try to set a good example and am working very hard to help improve our club. There is allot I do not know. I did know of the existence of the Colorado Council of Amateur Radio Clubs. The error the other day was mine completely. I thought we could use the 520 as a call site and then move. Which is what we did. I didn’t think it would be a problem. Learning sometimes involves making mistakes. I have monitored 520 for days and have heard nothing. And then I have monitored repeaters and heard people start calling CQ on a repeater. There are several hams in the area I consult w
ith on a regular if not daily basis. If you look at the board minuets you will see my name mentioned many times for bringing up ideas. Some ideas are good, some maybe not so good. The not so good ideas have a purpose, education, they start communications. And in communication is education. One thing I want to do is make a Welcome Kit for new and old hams. I will need help finding things to put in this kit. A band plan is a good start point. It would be very helpful.

You seem to be a very knowledge person, can I count of your help trying to organize a center point of information? I’ve started a club library, in hopes of providing our members and nonmembers a source of technical information. As with anything worth wild, it takes time.

On the other side, I have seen some hams who take things too serious. I was speaking with one last night who was a quite upset with some comments. We don’t need to upset others or hurt them with poorly chosen words.
