After you return from a big disaster you have another action to consider.
My experience has led me to believe that the average amateur radio operator
can be a more effective disaster relief coordinator than the average
inexperienced volunteer who has only read and watched videos about the disaster work.
Most disaster communicators end up taking control of a situation when chaos
tries to take over. If you agree, then rather than focus on the communications
side of disaster relief, you may now have the experience to be an in a position
to provide direct help to the relief agencies.
By direct help i mean that you formally join the relief agency and give them
your full priority and a 100% commitment to help.
Talk to your local Red Cross, Salvation Army, Emergency Management Director
and ask him if you can volunteer and become a member of their disaster
organization.
Then you can take their training and can work into their system and
bring your communications experience along with you.
i don't think FEMA is taking on any volunteers right now.
