I was a Chief Petty Officer stationed aboard a destroyer in Pearl Harbor
during 1991. On December 7th, 1991, the 50th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl
Harbor, I was on Ford Island operating KH6SP. The station was activated to
honor the service men and women killed that day. At 7:55 am, the time the
attack began, the station owner transmitted the same message sent out from Hawaii
50 years earlier. Later, my relief took control of the station in the home
of a Navy Chaplain who lived on Ford Island and I walked outside into the
bright sunshine very close to the island's runway. The time was 8 am, fifty years
and 5 minutes since the attack. The air was still and I could almost hear
aircraft, guns firing, and massive explosions. I have pictures from that day
that I view from time to time and remember.
