A big thanks to everyone for all the help. Lots of useful things to try -

I'm now sure the serial cable is the problem and it's the only accessory I
don't have a spare for. I have buzzed it out and it only has 3 pins
connected. A trip to the PC store is called for this week and I will let you
know what difference it makes.

Something else that points to the cable - I downloaded the excellent Ham
Radio Deluxe software and this runs fine without any sign of the radio
turning off so that has proved the pcr1000 is working, but if I tune to a
good station and then unplug the serial cable, the radio works for about 15
seconds and then switches itself off (the same problem as TalkPCR and
PCRScope have without unplugging the cable). I'm guessing these applications
all have their own way of handling the serial handshaking which cause these
different symptoms.

I belive both your problems are related to the serial cable you are using.

The Icom software need hardware handshake and uses CTS/RTS and whatever to
achive that. Your cable probably is a 3-pin cable with only TX and RX data
and ground that lacks handshake signals.

The pcr1000 needs a "keep alive" pin (DTR?) to be active to not switch
itself off. That signal are probably also missing from your serial cable.

Do not use adaptors and strange (Mac?) cables. Buy a standard $2.99 full
9-pin serial extension cable at nearest computer shop.
