[PCR-1000] ??

The first 8200 I owned was a little iffy and I sold it.  However, the MK2
units are super nice.
I love my PCR-1000, and it has served me well for many thousands (literally)
of hours, but I would like a "nicer" computer controlled receiver.
I would pay a fair price (in the 1000 dollar range) for a black box receiver
that could receive like an AOR5000 or and Icom 8500.
Has anyone on the list tried either of these computer controlled radios:

They look very interesting, but for these radios the software is everything
and I am worried that these radios are too specialized to support very many
3rd party programs.  That is the best part of the PCR, the wide variety of
super software for it.

There have been some very apparent and universal 'problems' with ICOM's
PCR-1xxx line.

1) It seems too sensitive to front end overload
2) It  'blows' the front end easily (from static ?) that
    other receivers seem to tolerate.
3) It seems much too prone to EPROM corruption - possibly from
    errant electrical noise or RF on the serial line and/or from
    mis-completed commands (like crashing or shutting down
    the computer first exiting the ICOM or TalkPCR
    application.  This same problem seems to happen with other
    PCR1xxx CAT programs as well.

Other receivers I've used (including a few 'black box' ones) do
not exhibit these problems.  Icom has never recognized them as
either their design or product problems - frequently faulting (and
charging) the user to repair the results.

I've spoken with two ICOM USA folks over the years and they both seemed
somewhat exasperated (frustrated ?) with ICOM Japan's apparent lack of
humility to admit the product's seemingly apparent faults - something
that, unfortunately, seems endemic in business culture -- in both
countries.
