I have been running my 1K for about six months now.  The computer is a
Toshiba laptop with a real 9-pin port.  It has XP Pro on it.
I run the ICOM software, Bonito, and PCRScope.  My main use is as a spectrum
analyzer for wireless microphone use.  PCRScope is by far the best spectrum
analyzer I have yet found for the 1K.  The spectrum display in the ICOM
software is useless and the one in the Bonito isn't even an RF spectrum
analyzer, but merely an audio analyzer, which I think is a worthless
feature.  It may be useful to some of you with other goals for the radio.
The great thing about the ICOM is it lets me listen to local radio in
between doing spectrum scans.
I have not yet fried my EPROM.

I am in totally agreement that the documentation from ICOM and Bonito just
plain sucks.  If these companies weren't the only ones with product like
this available, I would never buy from them again.  Unfortunately, they have
the corner on the market and I'm sure they know it.
It is still no excuse to release such shoddy documentation.  I really think
this is a side effect of the hobby going from homebrew and experimentation
to what is essentially 'consumer products.'  These manuals are as bad as any
I see for a TV or VCR, that tells you something.

Many of us I'm sure are finding out that running an ICOM PCR1000 under 
Windows XP isn't so easy.  I learned today speaking to a software guy who 
writes the software for his company that ICOM isn't being too "friendly" 
about handing over the source codes (I believe he said).  The long and the 
short of it is that Icom doesn't want to help anyone that isn't Bonito it 
would appear.  Some of you may recall when the ICOM was sold with ICOM 
software.  When Bonito came along (a German outfit) ICOM began shipping 
their PCR1000 with both the ICOM and the Bonito software in the box.

Now that I've purchased a newer laptop that runs on XP, I too am wondering 
just what programs are out there to allow me to control my ICOM PCR1000 
under XP.

Here's what I know:

TalkPCR wasn't written for XP
ScanCat software doesn't reliably (if at all) run the ICOM receiver under XP
The Bonito/RadioCom 4.5 won't run under XP (I don't have this confirmed yet 
but I can't get it to run)

Like most of us that have computers that only have USB ports instead of the 
older style serial connections, the use of the Serial to USB adapter is 
mandatory and it would appear as though, from what I've been hearing, that 
not all adapters are created equally.

Some of you may recall my earlier postings when I first got my PCR1000; now 
one or two years old now.  I don't have much time to enjoy my ICOM and I'm 
flat our disgusted that I can't enjoy it like I'd hoped.  If it isn't the 
adapter, it's the software, if it's not the software, it's the operating 
system (WIN 98 vs WIN XP, etc.).  I'm .... well, fed up.

I hope you all will report back to the group about your "system."

I'd like to hear the following from as many of you as possible, particularly

those of you in the states:

1. Operating system (Win98, Win98SE, WinXP, etc.)

2. Whether or not you are using the USB serial adapter and if so, which make

and model.

3. Which program you're using to control the ICOM receiver (TalkPCR, 
Bonito/RadioCom, etc.).

4. Whether you're also doing some decoding (e.g. CW, FAX, etc.) and if so 
which ones and using what software.

5. ANY comments on your enjoyment you'd care to share with us.

6. Your direct E-mail address if you don't care to discuss via the Forum 
(though I sincerely hope you won't mind as I'm sure there are others in my 
shoes out there ... and if not, they soon will be if and when they buy a new

machine or upgrade.

Ok ladies and gents, let's see some traffic on this ... PLEASE!
