[PCR-1000] PROBE1K

I've been using PROBE1K with my PCR-1000 for some time now, maybe 2 years. 
Normally I am using a Toshiba 70CT  handheld computer that I picked up on 
E-Bay for less than $200. The Toshiba is smaller than the PCR-1000 and works 
very well since PROBE1K is written for 16 bit DOS computers. This whole 
package can be stored in an old fashion cigar box.

PROBE1K has been successfully run my many users without causing any problems 
with the processor of the 1K like some other programs. PROBE1K also has the 
capability to scan as speeds of up to 40 channels per second. Although 
faster scanning speeds can be attained, the processor of the 1000 will not 
lock on to any signals. This software also allows one to use the PL or Tones 
along with the frequency while scanning to help monitor the proper agencies. 
With multiple priorities, some unique to this software there is very little 
chance of missing any activity. PROBE1K is written more for scanning regular 
VHF/UHF police/Fire type frequencies rather than HF. Go to

PROBE1K will run on an XP computer and I also use it with a HP ZE4805US 
notebook which I purchased on clearence for less than $800 several months 
ago. The only problem with using XP is the addressing of the serial ports do 
not allow for scanning at higher speeds. A program called DIRECT I/O 
http://www.direct-io.com/ needs to be run along with XP in order for PROBE1K 
to scan properly. DIRECT I/O runs in the background when PROBE1K is running 
and the XP computer will run as well and an old DOS computer without 
problems. I have the SP2 upgrade from Microsoft and it allows DIRECT I/O and 
PROBE1K to run just fine.

Since PROBE1K is written for DOS machines it will allow you to purchase 
someone old Notebook computer on E-Bay or other sources and allow it to run 
dedicated for the 1000 without tying up your normal computer. Even IBM has 
factory refurbished laptops with guarantee for only a few hundred $$'s. I 
still think my Toshiba palmtop computer is still the ideal solution due to 
it's small size.
