I'll chime in,
I've been using my receiver for 2 years now and have always been running XP.

While it's true that XP does not treat com ports like the older operating
systems always have,
I have not had any trouble. In the 2 years I've used different desktops and
notebooks. Just install the IC-PCR1000 software that came with it and it
works every time.
If the machine did not have a 9 pin serial port, I just used the usb serial
cable I got from the shack.

Yes, it is correct that ICOM has not helped us programmers with any command
codes or much of anything else.
But a quick Google search will turn up many sites with command codes and
programming information.

A weakness (IMHO) is how easy it is to trash your EPROM. From the
programming side, If you send a command to the radio and it has not replied
from a previous command, you can just abt bet your going to scramble the
chips mind.
If you have already made a backup of the EPROM, restore and your good to go.

I scrambled mine and did not even know about backing up the chip.
But there are a lot of images on the net that you can use. The problem with
that approach is each chips info is supposed to be tuned for that radio.
Your more than welcome to send your radio back and ICOM will calibrate it
and send it back.
But they are going to charge you for it (I don't believe it covered under
warranty) and you will be without a radio for a little while.
I just found an image on the net that I seemed to hear as much as I did
before the crash.

The strange thing in my case was, Bonito was what scrambled my EPROM.

My listening habits include,
Shortwave
Ham Bands
Weather Sats
Did I say shortwave?   :)

I'd like to hear the following from as many of you as possible, particularly
those of you in the states:

1. Operating system (Win98, Win98SE, WinXP, etc.)

2. Whether or not you are using the USB serial adapter and if so, which make
and model.

3. Which program you're using to control the ICOM receiver (TalkPCR,
Bonito/RadioCom, etc.).

4. Whether you're also doing some decoding (e.g. CW, FAX, etc.) and if so
which ones and using what software.

5. ANY comments on your enjoyment you'd care to share with us.

6. Your direct E-mail address if you don't care to discuss via the Forum
(though I sincerely hope you won't mind as I'm sure there are others in my
shoes out there ... and if not, they soon will be if and when they buy a new
machine or upgrade.
