[PCR-1000] Replacing the logic board

I've got a PCR-1000 with a fritzed MCU chip. Obviously, I could send it to
Icom and get a new board fitted, but I'm kinda inclined to design a new
board, given the excuse ;o)

Looking at the schematic, there's not a great deal to it apart from the MCU
itself and associated glue. A few regulators and such, a buck converter or
whatever for the 33V line, and an audio amp - mundane analog stuff.

I haven't decided on the new MCU yet, but I'm inclining toward a dsPIC (been
dying to use one for months).
External interface will be TCP/IP over 100-baseTX.

So; has anyone done this already, or got any suggestions regarding driving
the interfaces between the two boards? It looks straightforward at first
glance (and I've got working boxes for reference), but there might well be
the odd gotcha.

And, can anyone suggest anything interesting to do with the DSP interface?
Lots of potential, I think.
