Hi Bill,

I don't think that would work.   Al your frequencies would be 5KHz out of 
course, and the bandpass tuning would be a real mess, and forget using the 
BFO or sidebands.   It HAS to be 450KHz, no way round that.   Otherwise I'd 
have done this mod myself a year ago.  I think the only way is for someone 
to build a unit using carefully selected custom-made crystals.

True 450KHz are hard to come by but......
The 50KHz, F12, and 230KHz, F13, filters are in the second IF, which 
happens
to 455KHz. I've seen a few places with a good selection of 455KHz filters.
Some were as narrow as 500Hz, I think maybe here:

So, if you don't listen to FM broadcast or satellite comms.........
I'd like to find a nice 1.8KHz to replace the 230KHz for narrow SSB. What 
do
you think about wiring in the Icom 1.8KHz, FL-222, or the filter from
Inrad???
