[PCR-1000] opto scout/pcr1000

One of the great things about the digital scout is that it doesn't need a 
laptop, but it's larger physically than the original scout40 (the main 
reason why I have not bought a Digital scout yet).

I did what you were talking about. I wrote a program for PalmOS that did 
exactly what you're describing, it lived in series between the Scout and 
the PRC-1000 and added reaction tune (in addition to providing volume and 
squelch control for the 1000). The big problem was that it required 2 
serial ports and thus made the PalmOS hardware requirements a bit specific 
(only worked with TRGpro or HandEra 330 with a $100 CompactFlash serial 
port option).  I eventually decided it wasn't worth it and returned to 
using my R-10 with the scout.

It wouldn't be difficult to come up with a pc program to do the job, but 
just for a minute consider what you'll need for external hardware:

         Scout 40
         PCR-1000
         Optolinx or equivalent
         Laptop
         Secondary serial port for laptop, usb or pcmcia
         Power distribution for 1-3
         DC Power supply or Inverter for laptop
         Cables for all above

The only real reason why I'm enumerating the hardware is I have a 2nd 
PCR-1000 on order, and I plan to make a small briefcase station out of it 
and I need all that hardware too :-)

A much better solution would be to place a PIC in series between the 
PCR-1000 and the Scout to do the translation. If you picked a sufficiently 
beefy pic you could also add buttons for volume and squelch.
