I'm not sure about that that either! When lightning strikes to ground, heavy 
currents flow horizontally in all diections (popular heresay has it that 
cattle can receive severe shocks from the PD accross their spaced out legs) these 
will induce damaging EMF's in insulated cables - that's how the surge gets into 
your house on public utilities' cables.
