It's not a matter of criminality, it is a matter of privacy and the
implication of "phone" conversations. You can't legally tap into people's
regular (landline) phone conversations, why do you insist on receiving their
cell phone signals? Do you want *your* cellphone conversations to be
broadcast to everyone? Maybe hook up a pa system to your telephone so
everyone in the neighborhood can hear you talk dirty to your significant
other?

You can't listen to peoples portable land-line phones either, unless they
are using analog portable phones (this thread was about "cordless" phones -
not cell phones). If they used spread spectrum digital cordless phones, you
can't hear anything intelligible even if you do try to listen - just as it
is with digital cellphones.
