Mi dos centavos: I'd install the ICOM provided software to get a feel for
the radio.  Then go ahead and BUY the full version of TalkPCR - it's only
$45USD and worth every penny.

Don't forget to GROUND your radio AND provide a good lightening ground &
protection on ALL external antennas.  This includes the antenna you mount in
you attic.
There has been a lot of discussion on the radio 'building up static' and I
don't believe the power brick provides an effective or adequate ground
through the DC return side of the plug.
