[PCR-1000] PCR1000 serial cable substitute? Shielding problem?

Just bought a used PCR1000 for cheap ($150) at a hamfest minus the original
serial cable.

 I've tried 2 "off the shelf" (Belkin and Radio Shack) 9 pin male to female
serial cables and either the radio, or the cable, is emitting horrible RF
interference throughout the SW bands. Icom wants $35 for the original cable.
Would the original cable solve my interference problems?

I have used random cables with no problem. Are you sure the antenna is far
away and shielded lead-in?
