[PCR-1000] Interfacing PCR-1000 to WIN 2000 laptop via TalkPCR

Good morning!  I thought the list had been pretty quiet lately -- this
morning I discovered I wasn't registered anymore.  I fixed that!

The situation:   I've solved the PCR-1000 remote operating situation (at
last) with the acquisition of a new fire-breather laptop!  The machine runs
WIN 2000 and
(so far) appears to be a very nice operating system.  However, I'm confused
as to how to interface the PCR-1000 to the USB ports -- no traditional
serial port on the laptop.  I have the latest Beta version of TalkPCR
software -- thank you, Peter -- but have only run the original (registered)
version prior to now.
My question:  just what do I need to attach the radio to the computer -- a
patch cable with USB on the computer end and DB-9 on the radio end? OR do I
need to spend the $90 (CompUSA) to get one of the 'adapters' with the big
'bubble' in the cable and CD with software, etc. etc. etc. -- what the heck
IS all that?  Any information from your experiences would be greatly
