I had this problem, too, under windows 95 and 98. I had no problems with
that under Windows NT 4 or 2000. I currently use it under Windows XP Pro on
my work laptop without difficulty.
It was annoying because "Connection..." would appear and nothing would
work...scanning would stop and I couldn't press any control buttons for a
few seconds. As to why it is happening, don't know. I tried it on several
other machines with a variety of OSes, never had this problem on any
NT-style machine, but would have this problem only about 50% of the time on
95/98 machines.
Of course, your mileage may vary.

Subject: [PCR-1000] PCR1000 Connection problems
I just hooked up my new PCR1000 and I seem to be having a problem. While in
the memory scanning mode, sometimes the scanning shuts off and I see a
message on the top of the screen saying "connection". Once this message goes
away, I can restart scanning and it works fine for a while. Than the message
appears again and the scanning stops. Does anyone know why this is happening
and how I can fix it?
