Mark, you're right on the money with this one! It's
finally working for me.

I too was getting the OLE2DISP.DLL crash and on
looking found a much older version of the file in the
\WINDOWS\system directory (the new version is in
\WINDOWS\system32). Disabling the old version by
renaming it had no effect, there are some other, older
duplicate DLL's that I cleared up too. I also tried
switching off all of the visual panels by editing
PCR1000.ini, just as you did but for some reason I
stopped before I disabled the toolbar. I guess I
thought I'd need that to turn on the other panels
again!

The other problem had I experienced earlier was if I
was using COM2 for the PCR (I had another device on
COM1 also), the application would report a problem
with COM2 and exit, no OLE crash but no run also.
Putting the PCR on COM1 allowed me to get to the point
where I would see OLE crash. Incidentally the device
originally connected to COM1 failed when swapped to
COM2 using its app twice in a row, (not finding the
device) but then the third try started it working.
Does this show that serial connections in XP are not
initially reliable and somehow take a few tries to
reconfigure?

At the end of the road I have come to like TalkPCR and
will continue to use it but the Icom app has merits
too (I like the bandscope much better that the
spectrum display), it's just nice to be able to choose
