[PCR-1000] Winradio v. R1000?

Hi Dave,

I bought my Icom -1000 in 1998. A co-worker bought a comparable WinRadio
(although his was an internal one). At the time we lived about a mile apart
and exchanged frequency lists from time to time. We both had the same
inside antenna -- an attic longwire 50' through a Palomar balun -- and both
our houses were oriented in the same N-S direction.

We each could receive all the other's freq 'finds' - including some rather
weak beacons and mid east SW stations. Based solely on this very pragmatic
analysis, I'd have to say that the receiver capability of both units is
probably verrry close.

I bought the Icom unit because it fit the bill for a frequent traveler
(laptop with no room for an ISA card) and the fact that we were using a lot
of Icom's other products at work. We were getting pretty good support from
Icom America for their 'mil-spec' and OEM products. WinRadio was a bit of
an unknown from down-under.

However, if I had to make this same decision today, I think I'd go with
WinRadio - despite the difference in price (about $100 more for WinRadio ?).
My Icom unit has been reliable but WinRadio's user-friendly development
environment by itself might sway my decision.

Reading between the lines from Icom America's comments, I think they're also
are frustrated with Icom Japan's indifference to its PCR-1000 users. Icom
is still very much in the receiver business and this unit could easily be
incorporated into a sat system for full duplex ops - so there are lots of
other applications for this CCR technology.
