[PCR-1000] receiver location/lightning/power & audio

Hi

Can you do this sort of thing in Zim without the radio being stolen ? I
can't even put stuff on my window sill ... still, its an interesting
technical topic. Does radio Zimbabwe transmit on SW - or only FM? Wonder
if I'll receive it in Johannesburg if I polish up my FM beam.

No worries.....  Graham......   On the audio: I never noticed any
difference
at all....  Try it on the bench...  stick a hundred feet of wire
between the
radio and the speaker you use... It just keeps on talking.   Power
consumption is low...   So Voltage drop is low.....  I just used a
scrap of
Telco type wire. Ten 19 gauge conductors in a UV resistant jacket... I
think
I doubled them up for the power.... also switch between a 12 element
directional 800mhz beam and the duel band Comet.  Small dow-key relay
with
'F' connectors does that. I am 60 miles from Detroit and before all
this
digital stuff I could listen to services from there at will...... All
my
scanner coax is 70 ohm CATV and F fittings.  Before the pcr1k went up
there,
I did this with a BC580 scanner for several years, It never did fail.
Years
ago, I had a 5 channel CB radio up a 50 foot guyed mast to avoid using
coax....  That shaky setup run a couple of seasons and just worked! 
Left it
on channel 5 ( we are talking 1959-1960 here) Talked all over SE mi
with
that setup.

I can tell you stories about a two way video phone system I made out of
a
couple of old VCR's and two yard sale cameras between two houses with
about
150 feet of coax between them...... Lets grandkids see and talk to
Grandma,
full time, both directions.  Or a neighborhood 100 base t computer
network
that has 5 users on one broadband connection.

So you basically just take the risk or rather the insurance does, for
a
charge. Difficult here because availability is impossible - I'd bet I
have
the only PCR1000 in the whole country and to replace it would be an
expensive mission of note! So preservation is the issue with me and as
I've
said before I dare not leave an antenna connected 24/7.

Think I saw someone else ask about power and audio cables but didn't
see a
response. I assume you just beef the conductors up a bit for the power
but
on the audio? 60 ft is quite a run. Do you have any problems on that 
side ?
how do you overcome them?
