Greetings:
National SATERN Director, Major Patrick McPherson - WW9E - has ordered
an emergency activation of the 20 meter SATERN Net. The Net frequency
has been moved to 14.267.0 MHz + / - QRM. All available SATERN
Operators - particularly those with HF privileges - are asked to begin
monitoring the SATERN Net frequency tonight for as long as 20 meters
last. Depending upon a variety of factors, the net may move to a 40
meter or 75 meter frequency when 20 meters dies tonight. I am also
asking that all available SATERN operators continue to monitor the 20
meter SATERN Net for the next several days whenever possible and for as
long as the SATERN Net is in emergency operation.
Normal SATERN Net protocols apply. That is, there will be a Net Control
who will be in charge of the frequency. All transmissions should be
directed to the Net Control.
I have attached a number of press releases from an international
disaster news service below. You can also find news coverage on CNN and
other major news channels.
Please keep the people of Haiti and our Salvation Army personnel and
other disaster relief personnel already in that country in your prayers.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to
contact me at your convenience.
Respectfully,
WmH Feist3

Situation Update No. 1
On 2010-01-12 at 22:39:59 [UTC]
Event: Earthquake
Location: Haiti Capital City Port-au-Prince area
Situation:
A major earthquake hit the hurricane-battered island of Haiti Tuesday,
causing a hospital to collapse and prompting a tsunami alert for the
eastern Caribbean. The magnitude 7.3 quake hit close to the capital
Port-au-Prince, officials said. Several buildings toppled and the
streets of the capital were reported to be full of panicked people.
Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, has been through
untold misery in recent years. A series of storms and hurricanes in 2008
- Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike - killed hundreds and left up to a million
homeless. The island was just beginning to start showing the first signs
of recovery.

Situation Update No. 2
On 2010-01-12 at 22:49:01 [UTC]
Event: Earthquake
Location: Haiti Capital City Port-au-Prince area
Situation:
A strong earthquake has hit the impoverished country of Haiti where a
hospital has collapsed and people are screaming for help. According to
CNN the area is also under a Tsunami alert for the Dominican Republic.
Haiti and the Dominican Republic share the island of Hispaniola. The
earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centered about 14
miles (22 kilometers) west from the capital of Port-au-Prince, according
to the U.S. Geological Survey. An Associated Press videographer saw the
wrecked hospital in nearby Petionville, and a U.S. government official
reported seeing houses that had tumbled into a ravine. No further
details on any causualties or other damage were immediately available.
"Everybody is just totally, totally freaked out and shaken," said Henry
Bahn, a visiting official with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "The
sky is just gray with dust." Bahn said he was walking to his hotel room
when the ground began to shake. "I just held on and bounced across the
wall," he said. "I just hear a tremendous amount of noise and shouting
and screaming in the distance." Bahn said there were rocks strewn all
over the place and he saw a ravine where several homes had been built.
"It's just full of collapsed walls and rubble and barbed wire," he said.

More aftershock affected the capital City areas, following an 7.2
magnitude earthquake shocked today. A 5.9 magnitude aftershock shook
Haiti minuts after a major 7.0 magnitude temblor struck the impoverished
nation, prompting a regional tsunami watch, the U.S. Geological Survey
reported. A 5.9 quake is capable of causing considerable damage. The
local report says more people are killed and trapped under the rubble.

Situation Update No. 4
On 2010-01-12 at 23:27:39 [UTC]
Event: Earthquake
Location: Haiti Capital City Port-au-Prince area
Situation:
A major earthquake hit the impoverished country of Haiti on Tuesday,
collapsing buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince and burying residents
under rubble, a Reuters reporter in the city said. "Everything started
shaking, people were screaming, houses started collapsing ... it's total
chaos," reporter Joseph Guyler Delva said. He said he had seen dozens of
people apparently dead or injured lying under rubble, which blocked
roads. Panic-stricken residents were desperately trying to dig people
out from under rubble or searching for missing relatives.

Situation Update No. 5
On 2010-01-12 at 23:37:20 [UTC]
Event: Earthquake
Location: Haiti Capital City Port-au-Prince area
Situation:
The largest earthquake ever recorded in the area shook Haiti on Tuesday,
collapsing a hospital where people screamed for help. Other buildings
also were damaged and scientists said they expected "substantial damage
and casualties." With communications disrupted there were no reports of
deaths or injuries soon after the quake, as powerful aftershocks shook
the country. The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was
centered about 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of the capital of
Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of 5
miles (8 kilometers). It was the largest quake recorded in the area,
said USGS analyst Dale Grant, and the last major one since a
magnitude-6.7 temblor in 1984. An Associated Press videographer saw the
wrecked hospital in Petionville, a hillside Port-au-Prince district that
is home to many diplomats and wealthy Haitians. Elsewhere, a U.S.
government official reported seeing houses that had tumbled into a
ravine. Haiti's ambassador to the U.S., Raymond Joseph, said from his
Washington office that he spoke to President Rene Preval's chief of
staff, Fritz Longchamp, just after the quake hit. He said Longchamp told
him that "buildings were crumbling right and left" near the national
palace. He said he has not gotten through by phone to Haiti since.
Don Blakeman, an analyst at the USGS in Golden, Colorado, said such a
strong quake carried the potential for widespread damage. "I think we
are going to see substantial damage and casualties," he said. The quake
was felt in the Dominican Republic, which shares a border with Haiti on
the island of Hispaniola. Some panicked residents in the capital of
Santo Domingo fled from their shaking homes. In eastern Cuba, houses
shook but no major damage was immediately reported. "We felt it very
strongly and I would say for a long time. We had time to evacuate," said
Monsignor Dionisio Garcia, archbishop of Santiago. In Haiti, the extent
of the damage was unclear. "Everybody is just totally, totally freaked
out and shaken," said Henry Bahn, a U.S. Department of Agriculture
official visiting Haiti. "The sky is just gray with dust." Bahn said he
was walking to his hotel room when the ground began to shake. "I just
held on and bounced across the wall," he said. "I just hear a tremendous
am ount of noise and shouting and screaming in the distance." Bahn said
there were rocks strewn about and he saw a ravine where several homes
had stood: "It's just full of collapsed walls and rubble and barbed
wire." The U.S. National Weather Service issued a tsunami watch for
Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, but said historically the
region has seen few destructive tsunamis.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Gordon Duguid said U.S.
officials were holding emergency meetings. "We need to gather what
information we can quickly. We will of course assist in any way we can,"
he said. Felix Augustin, Haiti's consul general in New York, said he was
concerned about everyone in Haiti, including his relatives.
"Communication is absolutely impossible," he said. "I've been trying to
call my ministry and I cannot get through. ... It's mind-boggling."
