One can never predict propagation within anything near 1.0 probability
of accuracy.

Take today, for eggzample. I'm a "sometimes chaser" for the National
Parks on the air event. I typically "follow" N2CX who activates many
NPS units in the eastern part of the country. Typically, I can work
these units on 40 and 30 metres, with 30 being the "sweet spot." Hardly
ever on 20, because skip is usually too long.

Except for today. At 1600Z (noon local) I couldn't hear N2CX at all on
40. He was fine on 30. But GREAT on 20 meters. And, at about 1830 I
couldn't even hear him on 30 meters, but he was GREAT on 20. Go figger.

That's why I say we should adopt the "boy Scouts motto" - "Be Prepared"
- that means be prepared for anything an everything the ionosphere, and
sunspots can throw at us. I've worked 100 miles on 20 meters, and some
times I can't hear anything between about 20 and 200 miles on 80 meters.
