40m was rather terrible 2 or 3 years ago during the PA QSO party both Sat.
and Sundays.. I could barely hear any in state stations most of both days
although 80m was loud Sat. night. I ended up not operating as much since I
couldn't hear many stations on 40.
Conditions vary sometimes and some years are much better than others are far
as conditions go. Your antenna(s) also make a difference.. horizontal or
inverted Vees should do a good job if conditions are satisfactory where as
verticals, not as much.
