100% agree with John on potential issues with noise due to the laptop and/or
its power supply. Last year I tried out a new laptop and 80m was unusable
due to noise. Sorted it out as noise from the brick power supply that came
with the laptop. My temporary solution was that whenever I wanted to
operate 80m I would unplug the brick and run the laptop off of its internal
battery. Eventually it needed to be charged again so I would plug in the
brick but then have to change to 40m where the noise wasn't so bad.
I contacted the laptop manufacturer and got no reply on the issue, no
surprise.
The brick is rated at 19.5 VDC at 7.7A (yes, pretty hefty!), and I didn't
want the same problems this year so I grabbed a lab supply from work, brand
new, figured I needed to "burn it in for about 24 hours" prior to use in my
new test set, and had to make one trip to RadioSlack to get the correct
sized DC power plug and some banana plugs. The supply was nice and quiet
and definitely solved the problem!
Otherwise, I haven't used th IC-706, but N1MM is a great program which I
highly recommend.

P.S. Looks like Ray may have topped my Mifflin County record that I set a
few years ago. Hmm, I wonder if I should go back to Mifflin next year to
attempt to reclaim my record? It is much closer to where I live now so
would be an easy drive down there to do that. Or, should I go to Potter
County or one of the plethora of other counties that Ray currently holds the
record and attempt a new record? Guess I have a while to think about it!
What do you think, Ray? The gloves are off!
