Dave Robbins K1TTT (one of the premiere contestors in the world) has a short note at the end of the N1MM manual about why you MUST log dupes. If its good for him its good for the rest of us. I have been working dupes since I read this over 8 years ago.
I certainly respect Dave and his opinions a lot, but he doesn't set the metric for us.
And yes, if a person logs dupes, and sends that log in, the main thing it does is make more work for the log checkers.

There are certainly two or more sides to every issue. Certainly it can be an inconvenience to wait to QSO with someone. But it can also be an inconvenience to sift through duplicate contacts. Fortunately there really aren't that many since the ascendancy of computerized logging.
My own personal method of dealing with dupes is to tell the person they are a dupe, and move on. I don't need to explain anything.
I use N1MM at home and WB3W while mobile. It doesn't allow me to log dupes, so that kind of makes it a nuisance to have to log them.
